#115: The Trouble With Master Bedrooms

After a quick video of Sherry’s sparse closet sparked hundreds of questions on Instagram, we’re breaking down her process for creating a wardrobe that saves space, money, and energy. So if you want to tame your overflowing closet, cut your clothing budget, or take the stress out of getting yourself or your kids dressed each morning – this episode is for you. We’re also sharing an unconventional solution to filling those empty corners in your master bedroom. Plus John pushes back on a recent social media controversy.

You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, and Spotify – or listen to it below! Then use this page to check out any links, notes, or photos we referenced. Note: If you’re reading in a feed reader, you may have to click through to the post to see the player.

WHAT’S NEW

  • This will be our view for another couple of weeks now that our exterior brick painting has been pushed back to the end of October (cue the sad trombone). This photo is a few weeks old, but things are still looking remarkably green around here!
  • Sherry’s putting together a big blog post about her closet/wardrobe for later this week – and I figure it’s easier to have everything in one place, but here’s a quick peek at her side of the closet, which is what people saw briefly in Instagram Stories recently (you can watch those here)

  • In that post she’s also going to share a few different combinations of the items in her “uniform” to demonstrate what she means by narrowing the type, cut, and color of the clothes you buy – and then mixing things in different ways to make it feel like you still have different looks… even if many of them are made up of the same simple components.

  • We also recorded a video tour of every last hanging bar and drawer – so you can see what goes where (and how much of each thing there is) when that post goes up later this week.

Listener Question

  • Speaking of dressers… you can see in the photos from this post about our new master bed how we have various dressers situated in our bedroom. There are the two white painted dressers that act as nightstands, and the antique wood dresser across from the bed that we got as a hand-me-down from John’s dad.
  • That master bedroom post is also the one where we detail how we get our cheap Ikea curtains looking good to help fill our walls.

  • And here’s the third dresser (the one that stores our kid’s artwork, sentimental school papers, and fabric) that sits on the other wall.

  • We also mentioned objects like large floor mirrors, like this one we’ve had in our bedroom for ages. It’s actually one of the items that made our 10 things we’ve owned for 10 years list! If you haven’t read that post, it’s a good one full of classic home items that have gone the distance for us and lasted an entire decade (or more!).

Event Announcement

  • Come hang with us. We’re so happy to have a West Elm store back in Richmond with the opening of their new Carytown location, so we’ll be at their Grand Opening party on Thursday, October 25th from 6-8pm. There will be free food, drinks, music and 15% off any purchase in store with a portion of proceeds going to ART 180, which is a local charity that helps young people connect with art. Please RSVP if you plan to come so they’re sure to get enough food!

We’re Digging

  • That’s a photo from last November (again, things are still pretty green around here for now) but it’s visible proof of why I – and I know lots of you guys – LOVE the fall season, despite what Sherry said in this controversial Instagram post (although she did have a lot of people agree with her).
  • And here is Sherry rocking that new clay mask she mentioned, which she mixes with her favorite apple cider vinegar. I’m no face mask expert, but it’s 100% natural clay (with no additives or fragrances) and it’s apparently the “world’s most powerful facial.” Sherry has already done in a few more times since recording the podcast and can’t stop raving about it.

  • If you want more info on the “beauty routine” that Sherry mentioned – involving none other than apple cider vinegar and coconut oil – here’s a post that covers every “woo woo”detail.

And if you’re looking for something we’ve dug in a past episode, but don’t remember which show notes to click into, here’s a master list of everything we’ve been digging from all of our past episodes. You can also see all the books we’ve recommended on our Book Club page.

And lastly, a big thank you to Annie Selke for sponsoring this episode. You can score 15% off your order with the code YHL15. Plus, you can visit annieselke.com/YHL to get a look at their new fall collection.

Thanks for listening, guys!
