Babyliss New Big Hair (Review)

Babyliss New Big Hair Airstyler, £45

I’m always looking for things to cut down the time it takes me to get my hair ready for the watchful eyes of the world after washing it; the hopeful venture this time was the Babyliss New Big Hair – a nifty little hair brush with a built-in hair dryer. I was instantly drawn to its features, and after testing it for a few weeks, I’m ready to share my thoughts and tell you how I use it on my hair.

The Babyliss New Big Hair Airstyler is a rotating brush with a built-in hair dryer, which promises to deliver a frizz-free, high shine finish, whilst adding fullness and body for salon-blow dry results at home. The ceramic barrel measures 50mm, which is slightly bigger than the previous Babyliss Big Hair (42mm), and the bristles are made of a mixture of soft natural boar and nylon.

In the box you get the Big Hair brush and a protective cover, which is very useful to protect the bristles when storing or travelling with it. Using the brush is really straightforward – plug it in, choose your heat setting and hold the appropriate button to rotate it in the direction you want your hair to go. There are two heat settings (plus cool) and two rotation speeds; if the brush is on ‘cool’ mode it won’t rotate, on the lower heat setting it will rotate slower, and on the higher heat setting it will rotate faster.

The Babyliss New Big Hair is relatively noisy, which is to be expected of a hair tool with a built-in hair dryer, but it’s much quieter than my normal hair dryer. It’s also lighter to hold than a hair dryer, and my arms didn’t feel tired at all, even after doing my whole head of hair. One little problem was getting my hair stuck whilst the brush was rotating, which happened too often for my taste. It’s not hard to detangle your hair – just rotate the brush the opposite way or release the rotation button – but it did frustrate me a bit having to constantly stop to release my hair from the brush.

So, did it work for me? Well, if you have thick, curly or hair that’s difficult to manage, and you like your hair to look very straight at the roots and smooth, you probably won’t be totally satisfied with using just the Babyliss New Big Hair to blow dry your hair, as it won’t necessarily straighten every little bit of hair as well as a hair dryer straightener routine will do. However, what the Babyliss Big Hair does very well is lifting your hair at the roots and moulding the ends to give you a bouncy and voluminous, Kate Middleton-like hair style.

Unfortunately, the Babyliss New Big Hair doesn’t replace my hair dryer or straighteners in my haircare routine, so I don’t use it too often, as it’s an added third step to my hour-long hair sorting mission. But if I want super bouncy and smooth-looking hair, I like to follow these steps:

  1. Wash and towel dry my hair;
  2. Apply the Uniq One All In One Hair Treatment as a leave-in conditioner;
  3. Comb through any tangles with my Wet Brush;
  4. Completely dry my hair using my GHD Air Dryer and my fingers or the Ecotools Ultimate Air Dryer brush;
  5. Use the Babyliss New Big Hair on the top layer and ends of my hair;
  6. Smooth and straighten all over the hair with my GHD Hair Straighteners.

I told you it was a lengthy process, but if time is no object, the results are totally worth it! As you can see from the pictures, my hair looks so bouncy, voluminous and shiny – it’s like I’ve just come out of the hair salon! My husband even comments on how nice my hair looks whenever I do this hair routine.

Overall, I would recommend the Babyliss New Big Hair as an essential hair tool for anyone with naturally straight, flat or softly wavy hair, and as an added extra for people with unruly, curly, thick or coarse hair. It’s not too badly priced, but whether or not you should buy it, really depends on what you’re expecting to use it for. If your hair is like mine, you’re not going to be cutting down any time on your haircare routine, but using the Babyliss New Big Hair will give you a very professional-looking blow dry finish!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Babyliss Big Hair – have you tried it?
